PURPOSE
ONWAA is seeking a dedicated Policy Specialist to support the MYC Team in policy and legislation analysis. The work will inform First Nations Ontario Works and Income Assistance offices with understanding the legislative framework in which they operate. It will also inform local policy and process creation by Income Assistance offices.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience, in Political Science, Public Policy, or a related field.
- Proven experience in research and analysis, preferably within a non-profit or community-focused organization.
- Strong understanding and knowledge of communicating with adult learners.
- Strong understanding of data privacy and security principles.
- Knowledge of research methodologies including OCAP.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a team and independently.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Research clearinghouses, communication memos and Social Benefits Tribunal decisions and legal documents.
- Analyze legal text and legislation and regulatory text to inform and advise on compliance strategies.
- Develop and provide coaching with precise, actionable guidelines for Ontario Works offices.
- Communicate complex policy issues in accessible language to stakeholders.
- Employ quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques to tackle complex policy issues for First Nations.
- Research and advise on potential effects of proposed policy changes.
- Will research and advise on current system challenges that First Nations face in Income Assistance delivery.

Maintain contact with federal and provincial government officials to learn of new or changed government policies, programs and sources.
- Assist in reviewing and making recommendations on local policy considerations with stakeholders.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL
- Conduct thorough analysis of data to identify trends, challenges, and opportunities for improvement in First Nations Service Delivery.
ASSETS
- Ability to learn and navigate new software and technologies quickly.
- Knowledgeable of Indigenous issues and First Nations government systems.
- Knowledge of Indigenous traditions and cultures.
- Knowledge and proven experience in data visualization.
- Understanding of OCAP Principles.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Remote Work/Work from home offices
- Fast-paced environment, subject to hard deadlines.
- 35 hours a week. Condensed work week available. Work may involve irregular and unexpected hours.
- Ability to travel is required.
